Leading Effectively in a Hybrid World

Self-Determination Theory (video)

Now that we’ve gained a better understanding of hybrid leadership, let’s explore the finer details of Self-Determination Theory to help you navigate and overcome challenges.

🔖 What is Self-Determination Theory?

Self-determination refers to a person’s ability to make choices and manage their own life. The theory consists of the following three pillars:

👥 Relatedness (connection): Individuals need to experience a sense of belonging and attachment to other people.

🪜 Autonomy: Individuals need to feel in control of their behaviours, goals, and direction of their actions. This sense of being able to take direct action plays a major part in helping individuals feel self-determined.

🎯 Competence: Individuals need to gain mastery of tasks and learn different skills. When people feel that they have the skills needed for success, they are more likely to take actions that will help them achieve their goals.

In the following video, OpenUp psychologist Jochem will delve into:

🫶🏽 How to implement the first pillar, relatedness, to create stronger team connections.

🦸‍♀️ How to leverage the second pillar, autonomy, to help your team feel empowered in decision-making and trust their judgement.

🏆 How to implement the final pillar, competence, to help your team build their skills and confidence.
